In a recent policy change, China has announced that it will start issuing visas to Hong Kong and Macau residents with criminal records. Previously, individuals with criminal records were barred from obtaining a Chinese visa. This change is expected to make it easier for Hong Kong and Macau residents to visit mainland China for business, tourism, and family reunification purposes.
Prior to this policy change, Hong Kong and Macau residents with criminal records were not eligible for Chinese visas. This policy was in place for a number of reasons, including concerns about public safety and national security. However, in recent years, there have been calls to relax this policy, particularly from Hong Kong and Macau residents who have family or business ties to mainland China.
To be eligible for a Chinese visa under the new policy, Hong Kong and Macau residents must meet the following criteria:
- The criminal record must be for a minor offense.
- The offense must have been committed at least five years ago.
- The applicant must have no other outstanding criminal charges or convictions.
- The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they are not a threat to public safety or national security.
